Strengthening Connections Through Playback Theatre

Drama is often seen as a powerful tool for self expression and a medium for issues to be discussed in a social context. Playback theatre is a creative medium that can combine creativity and social healing at the same time.

In this three-day intensive workshop, participants will learn about Playback theatre by being actively involved in a community of learning. There will be hands on activities, demonstrations, mini- lectures, group discussions and sharing of our own stories and learning to do playback. Participants will also have opportunities to learn and apply playback theatre techniques onto their existing or new programmes.

Who should attend:

Social Workers, Programme Executives, Special Ed teachers and assistants, counsellors, group facilitators, community workers and drama educators. It is also suitable for people who are interested in using drama to facilitate a deeper understanding within their community.

Course Outline:

To learn and understand the foundation skills and principles of Playback theatre
To enhance participants’ sensitivity and ability to listen deeply to the many layers of a story.
To experience the roles of actor, musician, conductor and teller
To develop participants’ spontaneity, creativity and confidence in self expression and self-presentation.
To understand the role that story has for furthering understanding in a community.
To understand possible applications of playback theatre with a range of issues and groups within a community.

Participants who meet 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by Academy of Human Development

Agnes Law is a dance movement therapist whose work is in bringing creative arts into the social and therapeutic fields for schools and community.

Agnes is also a trained social worker and playback theatre practitioner, having graduated with a Diploma in Playback theater from the School of Playback Theatre in USA. She has trained under the founder of playback theatre, Jonathan Fox and other highly experienced playback theatre teachers such as Jo Salas, Veronica Needa and Beverly Hosking since 2002.

Anne Chua is an educational therapist who works closely with children and families with multiple disabilities and special needs.

Her interest in Playback Theatre (PBT) began in February 2002 and she has graduated from the School of Playback Theatre (New York ) since 2007. To date, she has been using the playback theatre approach to work with regular school children, working adults, young professionals, married couples, pre-school teachers, and families since 2002.

She has conducted several Family Life Education workshops, social skills workshops, drama-related camps, and family day events in collaboration with Fei Yue FSC, AWWA FSC and educational training centres like RTRC.
